Louis Latour’s distinguished estate spans 50 hectares and boasts the largest assortment of Grand Cru vineyards in Burgundy. Despite its négociant-éleveur status, this house retains its independence and continues to be overseen by the original founding family.
The Montrachet Grand Cru enclave, comprising a mere eight hectares nestled between Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet, has a rich history dating back to the 13th century when it was referred to as ‘Mont Rachas.’ The term ‘La rache’ in the local Burgundian dialect, synonymous with ringworm, alludes to a skin ailment causing hair loss. This is attributed to the barren and rocky hillside, formerly adorned with only thorny bushes until vines were introduced.
Montrachet’s terroir is an exception, as its typically Pinot Noir-reserved brown soils work alchemy on Chardonnay, yielding one of the world’s finest white wines. The east-facing orientation captures the evening sunlight, a crucial factor for achieving optimal ripeness. The grapes are sourced from a 0.80-hectare parcel spanning the central part of North Montrachet, from the hilltop to its base, on the Puligny-Montrachet side.
This wine pairs exceptionally well with shellfish, lobster, and various fish dishes.
